Egyptian Pyramids and Stuffed Pigeon in Downtown Cairo


I'm just back from the most amazing two weeks in Egypt. We travelled from Cairo down to Southern Egypt visiting sites and sailing down the Nile on a felucca (super-chilled sail boat, think antithesis of a cruise boat) before spending a week on the red sea kite surfing. If you've never been to Egypt, go now! Historic Egypt is empty of tourists, everyone is so welcoming and you have the sites to yourself.

We visited the pyramids at Giza with no other tourists around. We almost had the place to ourselves which probably hasn't happened since Napoleon arrived in 1790's reviving Egyptomania. Check out the panoramic below with no one in site!

We rode horses out over the sand and avoided the our buses that arrive on the road.

Once you've visited the pyramids get back to Cairo for more amazing history and great food. If you want to go all out authentic you need to visit Gomhouriya in Downtown (42 Sharia Falaki). This is the place to go for stuffed pigeon, a truly Egyptian dish. Rock up, grab a seat in this cheap and cheerful restaurant. Tell the waiter how many birds you want. One each should hit the spot!

They come with salad, tahini, Egyptian bread and this lemon, stock broth - perfect for washing down the pigeon and rice stuffing.

I can't remember if they serve beer but there's a place across the road that does. Grab a cold Sakara lager. What better way to celebrate conquering the pyramids and beating the tourists by drinking a beer with a pyramid on it (named after the Step Pyramid of Zoser at Saqqara just south of Cairo). The stepped pyramid was the world's first stone monument! Mmm, drink in the history...
